Leg pain: Is it a sign of peripheral artery disease?

  - PAD Awareness Month

Leg pain with exercise usually is normal. But severe pain when you are only walking a short distance may be a sign of a condition called peripheral artery disease(PAD). This condition, also known as peripheral vascular disease. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, about 8.5 million Americans have peripheral artery disease, including 12 to 20 percent of people older than 60.

Whatcan I do to prevent peripheral arterial disease?

Because PAD most commonly results from atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, you can reduce your risk for developing the condition by following these guidelines:

1.     Don't smoke.

2.     If you have diabetes, see your health care provider regularly and follow all diet and medication instructions.

3.     Lower your blood pressure if it is high.

4.     Eat foods low in fat and cholesterol.

5.     Lose weight if you are overweight.

6.     Exercise regularly according to your health care provider's recommendations.

7.     Try to reduce stress in your life.
